Before the CA Star Party last Friday, I did a practice run of solar viewing in parking lot by Adler. The skies were clear but the winds were picking up and a cloud front was moving in fast.
I brought out 130mm f/5 Vixen newt and 180mm f/12 Takahashi cass mounted on my portable Orion SVP gem.
I had previously shot solar system stuff thru eyepiece projection with a 3MP Nikon SQ point-n-shoot camera. Using a bracket to mount to eyepiece. I wanted to test out shooting the sun with the 5MP iPhone 4 camera thru Meade 12.4mm plossl eyepiece.
The newt comes with cover with aperture mask of 40mm. I taped a scrap piece of Baader solar film to the opening.
1/718sec, iso80, 650mm
I also tested using full aperture filter.
The iPhone's screen glare made focusing a chore. There was also some light leakage between phone and eyepiece. But I was overall pleasantly surprised.
