Is anyone planning on attempting to image the sun up to on the 20th? Perhaps we can get a shot of the moon beginning to come up from under the sun. From the way it looks in Stellarium if we can find some ground with a clear shot on the horizon some good images can be had. Does anyone have access to a high rooftop in the city? That would work as well.

Are the Dunes an option?

I would think any of the beaches in IN/MI would be good, as the Sun sets in the northwest, out over the Lake.

We're going to do a non-public observation from Conway. It's not a perfect horizon, but pretty low. Then when the Sun sets we're going to have out monthly board meeting. I'm hoping to do a mock transit run before the eclipse starts.

Due to NATO my employer has us working from home Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

For the eclipse, I think I will head over to Hickory Knolls. It will be a good trial run for the Transit.

It depends on where you set up. That is part of why I want to go scout it out before the transit.

Weather.com says mostly sunny with the storms on Monday.

wunderground.com says 40% chance of showers.

accuweather.com says 35% chance.

The solar eclipse of 2012 MAY 20 will be annular for portions of the western USA, but will be partial for Chicagoland. The partial eclipse will begin at 19:22 CDT for Chicago observers. By the time that the Sun sets, its diameter will be 61.5% covered by the Moon.

WARNING: To avoid severe damage to your eyes, do not view the eclipse directly. The projection method is recommended.

The forecast was 40% chance of thunderstorms over Arlington Heights. Instead we got a thin layer of clouds through which the Sun could be seen. I was able to view the Moon taking a bite out of the Sun through the projection method.

The weather gods smiled on us so Rich and I got to see just about the whole eclipse from first contact until just about sunset. A house got in the way and block the final moments.

It was an awesome sight.
