It’s nearly time for the monthly New Moon spotting challenge. My detailed article previewing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my related graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.
Below is a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Moon aged 1.5 days on 2008 DEC 28 at 18:05 CST. It includes Mercury near the center and Venus at the top. Venus and the Moon will be positioned somewhat similarly after sunset on 2011 DEC 25.
Thanks, everybody, for participating and providing fine photos. In January some of you may be able to spot the Moon less than one-day old in the form of the Lunar Boat. I’ll initiate a new thread next month, but details and graphics are already on my website: www.CurtRenz.com/moon
Here's the important one. Yes, it really says, "Cubs Suck."
When I was six years old and living on the northside of Chicago, my late father sat me down and explained that in our family we mainly root for the Chicago Cubs. He also noted that there is another team on the southside called the White Sox, which is our favorite team in a different league.
Whenever the Sox are in contention, I cheer for them even though principally a Cub fan. I certainly did so in 1959 and 2005 when the Sox were in the World Series. They do represent Chicago. My friends and relatives who are fellow Cub fans behave similarly. I cannot understand why there are a few Sox fans that not only do not reciprocate, but for some reason are more anti-Cub than pro-Sox as your tattoo seems to proclaim, Paulie. Sorry you feel that way.
