I realize you're kidding, Rob, but in the vacuum of space, any separating particles will not spread too far from each other in the near future, and none will get any closer to Earth than 0.234 AU (35 million km) on October 16. If their orbits have shifted enough when the particles return in about twelve thousand years, perhaps you'll witness their meteor shower if you've kept eating your Wheaties.

Interestingly, I’m now acting in a comedy movie in which Astronomer Joe is recruiting members of this message board to pretend to witness a fireball meteor that passes over Chicago and flattens the villain’s parked car. That scene will be shot between 8 and 10 am on Sunday. Let Joe know if besides observing stars, you would like to become a star yourself!

External Influences on Elenin...?

This was sent to me from a Chicago Astronomer fan...



At first, I thought it was just another mis-interpreted vid. Oversaturated sensor, lens flare, digital artifacts. A lot of imagination.

But dig the expanding bubble from behind the Jupiter area. Not that it came from the planet and I'm trying to figure if it's just a lens flare from the over-exposure of Jupiter....but odd that the object identified as comet Elenin is altered.

I'm leaning toward lens flare. A different story if Jupiter was away from the edge of the frame.

Maybe the real reason why they are bringing the folks home from the ISS is because we now have multiple fragments of elenin coming our way? Seriously... If that was a true explosion it was freaking massive!

Comet Elenin passed through perihelion (closest to Sun) today, September 10, at 17:14 UT and is now headed back toward the outer portion of the solar system. It will pass north through the ecliptic plane (ascending node through the Earth’s orbital plane) on September 14. From our vantage point the comet will have its least angular separation from the Sun (1.9° north) on September 26. It will pass its closest to the Earth on October 16 at 0.234 AU, while in the constellation of Cancer which is well into the northern celestial hemisphere. Let's hope there will be something left to see.
