I always find it funny when someone who does something for a living, then misses something in their personal life in an area they do every single day. That is my story today, and my tale of bad flocking planning (I am a project manager).
It started by ordering my new FlockBoard on Wed. I was very happy to see it was scheduled to arrive today (Friday). I just used regular shipping, but as it was coming out of Ohio it was a quick delivery.
I go downstairs from my office mid-day today thinking the mail person had to be close, only to find in my mailbox a "sorry we missed you" note. Being home all day, I didn't miss anything, so this was a bit frustrating, but it happens. I called the post office who showed no sympathy and said I could pick it up tomorrow. Not to be out done, I jumped in my car and started driving around all the side streets in my general area (like where this is going?).
Three mail people later, I actually find the person who was delivering my route today! He was a nice guy (not the normal guy), and let me take my package of FlockBoard. Now onto the real project...crisis one resolved.
I then come home and gather all the needed tools. A straight edge to mark the roll, something to cut it with, screwdrivers, etc... I then take apart my scope. That was actually very easy. I had nothing left on the tube so I started to measure the FlockBoard.
I put the entire amount of Flockboard I ordered into the tub to let it unravel as the directions indicate so I could mark where I needed to cut. It is here I notice I didn't have enough to circle the tube twice! Keep in mind this is only 21" long. Could my math be off...no 8" diameter X 3.1415 should give me circumference. Let me check that diameter...
It is hear every saying about measuring twice, an ounce of prevention, take a moment to do it right, was coming into my head. Also in my head is my wife saying "Why wouldn't you just buy an extra foot to be safe? The stuff is not that expensive." All of this is going on in slow motion I see the tape measure going beyond 8", and into 8.5" land.
You have to be able to laugh at yourself I always say, and this was a rookie move on so many levels. With that said I was going to be short. Anyway, I managed to flock the top half of my scope tube properly. I started there as it has the most parts that bolt in. Plus I figured since that is where the light comes in first, it would be most effective there for now. I then used the remaining FlockBoard and did the bottom half (or as much as I could). I was happy to see it fit in there length wise very well. I do have about a 2" gap running up half the tube from the bottom my scope right now, but I can already see what an amazing difference it is making.
I will say this, it was very easy to install. Took me less than an hour from beginning to end, and the material looks like it is made very well and sets in there nicely. I also used this opportunity to use my camera lense blower to blow any dust off my mirrors. I only need to align everything back up and I am good to go, until next week when I pull the bottom apart and do it again!
As punishment for my bad planning and jumping the gun, I see the clouds have rolled in. Weather says it will be mostly clear tonight, we will see. Sorry my punishment is impacting everyone else with a scope tonight.
