The 2004 Perseid
Meteor Shower

It is predicted that this years Perseids will be a good one for us city dwellers. Chicago Astronomers certainly should be on the lookout the evenings of the 11th and 12th of August.

This is a good year for Perseids, for two reasons, explains Bill Cooke of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. First, the Moon is new in mid-August; moonlight won't spoil the show. Second, in addition to the usual shower on August 12th, there might be an extra surge of meteors on August 11th caused by a filament of dust newly drifting across Earth's orb

Hey Joe,

I think there is one before this. I will check my notes and let you know. I will def be looking out for this one. I missed the last one due to clouds like they always get me here. But I am bound and determined to get one sometime this year. Whats the numbers on this one. Are they saying it will be a good one.

Since the Earth's orbit will intersect the "Ribbon" of the dust trail, predictions state that upwards of a hundred per hour can be expected for dark skies. I will be content to see a handful of brightones in Chicago's mucky and light polluted skies.

It will be one of the better ones to catch this year.
