The Chicago Astronomer Participates in the "Discover the Universe Project" from Astronomy Magazine
In the May 2011 issue of Astronomy magazine, there was a article by announcing a initiative called "Discover the Universe", calling for all astronomy clubs and groups to bring out their scopes, set them out in public ways and share the skies...
The Chicago Astronomer does this almost exclusively and thought perhaps we could participate. In communication with Associate Editor, Mr. Bill Andrews, he agrees that the Chicago Astronomer fits nicely into the goals of the D.U. program and welcomes us aboard. Involvement includes receiving educational materials to pass out at star parties, promotion assistance and inclusion of our narrative & pics in a future issue.
With that, I fill out the proper form and await the package.
And what a package....
Arriving in a scant few days, a huge box was waiting for me. Inside is a treasure of flyers and materials...
A few copies of May's Astronomy issue...
A host of "Beginning Astronomy" guides...
Bunches of a special insert on Generation X & Y...
And a really cool "at the scope" reference, phase-by-phase lunar highlight maps..
On a busy star party session, we could easily distribute most of the handouts provided, but we must smartly weigh each value and use to enhance our education of our visitors - but I could see the lunar one used at anytime we target the Moon.
We will also document distributing the materials via pics and narratives..and my call if we should wait until several sessions are under our belts...which I think we will do.
Glad to be part of this program and along with others across the nation, bring the skies back down to the people.
