The Orinid meteor shower will be appearing in 2004 from October 2
to November 7 and will peak around October 21st.

The meteors will appear to come from a point in the constellation of
Orion. Under ideal conditions it's possible to see 20 meteors
an hour.

The meteor shower will be best seen at its peak after the First Quarter
Moon setsby midnight.

The closest bright star is Xi Orionis.

Who's going to watch this one. I am going to work on the next 6 hours of the Meteor Cert. Let us know if you catch this one or not. Lets hope for clear skies and a somewhat warm night.

Maybe I'm cheating myself out of an experience, but I have never been a great oberserver of the Orionids. Maybe it's due to the light pollution or early morning activity, but they don't rank with the Leonids or the Persieds in enjoyment for me.

It also doesn't look good for clear skies to catch any this time around.

If the skies are nice, I may check them out - I have the day off tommorrow, so Claire and myself may go roaming around. Depeneding on where we end up at night I will make an effort, but the sky has been mostly crap, with few, short stints of clearness peaking through at random times.

I really hope that all clears up by the 27th.

I've got conflicting info on the cloud cover but both sources agree that after 1am it will be mostly overcast so I won't be up late or up early for the Orionids.

What's bugging me is one source says that it'll be clear from 7pm until midnight but the other says 100% overcast. I'm dying to get my scope outside. I guess my plans will have to remain "soft" until I get home to see for myself.

That may be because, (my guess) different forecasters classify "low clouds" and "mist" in different ways. Whatever you callit, I don't think skies are going to be clear any time soon. We used up our "clear sky quota" on 9th. I just hope we can squeeze out a little more for the eclipse; 84 mins of totality...just imagine.

My remote skies, 50 miles from Chicago, were completely overcast all night so I wasn't able to see anything.

This morning at 5am, as I stood next to my garage enjoying the constellation Orion in his full spendor, I witnessed a meteor streaking by. I was temped to pull up a lawn chair and watch for more but the throught of traffic on I90 after the sun rose (i.e. mid-rush hour) got me scurrying off to work.

We had cloudy skies here so no observing for me. I was hoping to start the next 6 hour certbut I guess I will have to wait until the next shower
