Who will be the first to spot the July New Moon with naked eyes after sunset? The Dark Moon will be in geocentric longitudinal conjunction with the Sun on 2010 JUL 11 at 19:40 UT (14:40 CDT). Now that we’ve passed the summer solstice, we’ve entered the half-year period that is less than ideal for sighting really young Moons from north of the tropics. Nevertheless, many North Americans may be able to gaze upon a thin crescent Moon aged a little more than one day on July 12. Some Europeans may see it even sooner. Most observers will have better luck on July 13 when the Moon will appear between Venus and Mercury, although sagging beneath the straight line connecting them.
I’ve created a graphic previewing the west-northwestern sky from Chicagoland 25 minutes after sunset on July 12. Another one is for July 13 at 40 minutes after sunset.
