Who will be the first to spot the June New Moon with naked eyes after sunset? The Dark Moon will be in geocentric longitudinal conjunction with the Sun on 2010 JUN 12 at 11:15 UT (06:15 CDT). Some North Americans may want to accept the challenge of trying to spot a well less than one-day-old Moon that same day. Those on the west coast particularly may want to give it a shot, but even with telescopic aid the attempt may be futile. However, Hawaiians may be allowed a more realistic although still quite challenging opportunity. Most of us should have better luck the following evening.
I’ve created a graphic previewing the west-northwestern sky from Chicagoland 20 minutes after sunset on JUN 12. I’ve also made graphics demonstrating the crescent Moon’s passage by Venus during each of the following three evenings. They should well serve most North American observers.
