The weather this past weekend didn’t allow for much astronomy, but that didn’t stop me from looking at the sky. Saturday night I went out with my girlfriend to see a friend of mine play acoustic guitar in Crown Point. We couldn’t find any parking on the Courthouse Square, so I had to park off the square, which was looking due east. Behind us the sun was peeking out from the clouds just before setting. Hillary and I were sitting in the car listening to the White Sox game, when she said, “Look! A rainbow!” I grabbed my camera and starting getting pictures. It was faint, and didn’t arc very high, but I managed to get a few decent pictures before we headed off to the bar.

Pretty view of the Old Lake County Courthouse.
Sunday evening I was driving to Hillary’s house to watch the Blackhawks game with her, and stopped for a cup of coffee. When I walked out of the gas station I noticed a rainbow Sundog in the clouds. Yeah. Again. I unlocked my car and grabbed my camera, and in my excitement I left my keys and coffee sitting on the roof of my car while I walked to get a better view. Unlike the last rainbow Sundog I saw, I didn’t have much time to snap a lot of pictures, so I really hoped that the ones I had turned out. They’re okay, but not as good as what I saw in the moment.
My first look, Rt. 6 & 149, Valparaiso, Indiana, Sunday May 9, 2010. 7:00 PM.
Starting to fade.
It completely disappeared soon after this.
The sky stayed fairly clear the rest of the night, but between the hockey game and work, I didn’t get any telescope time in. Oh well. I still saw some cool stuff this weekend.
