My name is Anthony (stargazertony at all online sites) and I currently live in Apple Valley, California which is located in the western Mojave Desert.
I am currently the 3 term star party coordinator, webmaster, and forum moderator for my astronomy club the High Desert Astronomical Society (www.hidasonline.com) which also operates the Luz Observatory at the Lewis Center of Educational Research. I volunteer my time to all the public viewing events held at the Luz Observatory. I am in the process of getting the keys to the observatory and becoming a telescope operator for the public outreach events. I have been a member of the High Desert Astronomical Society since early 2003 and held my first post in 2004 when I became the clubs Vice President then President. I tend to be the guy in the club that likes to hang out with the newcomers to the club and help them learn and understand how their telescope works and make them feel welcome. I am also a current member of the Astronomical League and am working on earning their many certificates for amateur astronomers.
My main interest in astronomy is public outreach, and sidewalk astronomy. In fact I am in the Sept. edition of Sky and Telescope magazine because of my attemp to bring people into astronomy via the internet. I also work hand in hand with several schools and organizations to supply them with amateur astronomers for science day and other events. My interest in astronomy began when I was 7 years old and I recieved a Tasco 4.5" newt, but didn't really get to pursue it until 2003 when I became a fanatic!
The equipment I use is a Discovery 12.5" PDHQ F5 , a Meade LX3 8" F10 fork mounted Schmidt Cassegrain, an Orion 4" F12 Maksutov, and a 4.25" F3.9 imaging Newtonian mounted to a Celestron non goto CG5 EQ mount which I use for my attempts of beginning astrophotography. I also use 20x80mm mounted astronomical binoculars which really do a fine job for wide field viewing of deep space objects. My observing interests are Comets, Globular Clusters, Galaxies, and Nebulae. Another thing I love to do is repair, refurbish, and modify telescopes. All of my scopes are a work in progress. The thing that hooked me on Astronomy was my first view of Jupiter through a Tasco 4.5" Newtonian telescope that my parents gave me for Christmas back in 1977. I wish I still had that scope!
