Normally I would welcome new members, vancouverbusii, but this is a scientific message board and I find wild and fanciful speculations presented as fact to be out of place here unless supported by sound evidence, ideally that which has been published in a scientific journal for peer review. “Wanting” to believe should never be automatically equated with actually knowing.

It’s unfortunate that a legitimate thread for newcomers with questions about flashing stars has now become cluttered with unrelated nonsense in four long successive posts. There are plenty of pseudoscience websites for woo woos who like to invent silliness and then convince their readers that a particular government agency is the keeper of all scientific truths, and is forcing all professional and amateur scientists to join in a leakproof conspiracy to hide secrets just to take away joy from those who are clueless.

Hi and welcome Vancouverbusii.

This is all very interesting, but you have attached your poorly edited screed onto somebody else's topic about a specific star in the sky. In board etiquette land, this is called "threadjacking." It would be much more appropriate and polite to have started your own thread. I believe the proper place for this would likely be the section on Unexplained Phenomenon in Astronomy.

If possible, you might find it easier to engage others in an interesting discussion with just a little bit of work on format and grammar if you are able to do so.

I am not a mod here, so we will see if Joe wants to move you to your own thread or not, but hope these suggestions help out in the future. It is obvious that you feel strongly about this topic, and I hope that my suggestions help to spur the discussion that you seek.

For myself, I would love to hear what evidence you have for these stories presented as factual, if any. I believe the closest we have to Atlantis was the explosion of the Santorini volcano in 1500BCE that likely wiped out the far flung, thriving, peaceful, and matriarchal Minoan civilization, and left an enormous crater 400m deep in its place.

You’re welcome, Michael. It’s always nice to welcome a curious new astronomer into the fold. Indeed, mountains can produce unsteady air above them that leads to stars twinkling and shifting colors.

Hi everyone. I have seen what everyone on here has been discussing in Texas in the North Eastern sky. It is the biggest brightest "star". It only rises above the horizon and stays there moving slowly to the South East. It is in the sky in the morning and is still visiable at dawn. It is bright and has flashing red green and white lights. It is visable with binoculars. I have seen it for the last few years but only in the fall and winter. Two days ago I saw it in the morning and there was a bright red "star" close to it. I watched it all the way to work but as the sun came up it grew dim and was gone. Its frustrating that it can not be explained nor is it found in any research that I have found. I am originally from Roswell NM so when I mention it to anyone I always get some smart answer about aliens and UFOs! But its there and I see it almost every night and morning. It rises slowly also with it at its peak around 10 pm Texas time. So what does everyone think??

The easily brightest (“biggest” would be hard to determine regarding seemingly point sized objects) “star” since Venus recently dropped out of our evening western sky is Jupiter. This year Jupiter rises in the east before passing into the southeast, south, southwest and finally setting in the west. On September 21 Jupiter was in opposition to the Sun and rose at sunset, reached a peak in the south around local midnight (near 1 a.m. daylight time) and set at sunrise. Since then each of those events has occurred about four or five minutes earlier each day. Does this sound like a description of what you have been seeing?

my knowledge of space and stars is very limited but I can tell you this I was up this morning around 5 am and just happened to look in the southern sky from Seattle area and what I saw I have never in my life before it was the brightest flashing changing color from red to white to blue star I have ever seen in my life. I thought at first it was a plane because it was moving and in a span of 15 min. it was beyond my view on the horizon. Now I'm not an expert by any means but I do know when something is way out of the norm and that is. I will be up tomorrow morning and try to catch it on camera, I would really like to hear from someone that knows what's going on because that is not a typical star it is to big, bright and fast to be anything typical in our solar system and I would have to lean to the alignment of 2012 as having something to do with it. My question is how did the Mayans even know some of these planets like pluto were out there we didn't discover them till we had telesopes? yet a 5,000 year old tribe knew of them and of the alignment coming up?

Welcome to the message board, wild150. It was wise of you to come to a website where members are actually knowledgeable about astronomy.

Forget that Mayan and 2012 nonsense. It is spread by con artists who hope to sell books designed to scare those ignorant of astronomy. The Mayans knew nothing about Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. They knew nothing of an alignment in 2012. The one to which the hucksters refer was most exact in 1998, not 2012, and had no impact regarding earthly events. The notion of alignments having earthly significance is astrological silliness. The Mayans drew up future calendars all the way up to 2012. They had to stop at some point. That does not imply they thought that would mark the end of the world or any type of disaster. As you suggest, there was no way they could know about such things.

What you saw this morning was likely Sirius, which is far and away the brightest fixed star. The planets Venus and Jupiter (and occasionally Mars) appear brighter. We get questions about Sirius sightings at this time every year. From Seattle on 2010 OCT 30 at 05:00 PDT, Sirius would have been 5° to the left of due south and 25° above the horizon. It will reach that point about four minutes earlier each night. Due to the Earth’s rotation it would have appeared to be moving toward the right by the width of a Full Moon about every two minutes. Note that the zenith (straight-up) is 90° above the horizon, and a Full Moon is 0.5° wide. If the star disappeared on you, that was likely due to a cloud. Read earlier posts in this thread regarding the cause of a star’s flashing colors. Does my narrative seem to describe what you saw?

Also be alert for aircraft and artificial satellites such as the International Space Station. The ISS is very bright and appears to move rather quickly. Jupiter is currently the quite bright object seen halfway up in the south during the late evening. And next week Venus will be popping up into the predawn eastern sky as the brilliant Morning Star. Emergency 911 operators will undoubtedly be getting a lot of calls about a UFO.

My first thoughts were Sirius, International Space Station, or an airplane. Sirius is very bright by stellar standards, but not as bright as ISS sometimes gets. I think we can rule out ISS because I am pretty sure we are only seeing evening passes in the next week or so. It also travels west to east through the sky, if that can further rule it out. Sirius would not have disappeared over the horizon in such a short time span from the position Centaur has it calculated. That leaves an airplane as the most likely suspect. Sorry to disappoint.

Okay, you started by saying that your knowledge of space and the stars is limited, yet are confident that what you saw is not normal. I'm not trying to be mean, but if you admit to not carefully watching the sky on a regular basis, how would you know what is "normal?"

My advice is to start paying attention to the night sky, study star charts, learn the positions of the planets, and learn the patterns of air traffic in your area. My girlfriend often points to airplanes with bright lights and asks me if it is International Space Station. Most of the time I have to tell her no, it is not, and point out that the plane is traveling east to west, towards Chicago, and opposite of ISS. I know what is "normal" in the sky near where I live, and so far, I have seen very little that is not normal.

I'm assuming from the 1800+ postings of people that say they saw the same thing they also think it's out of the norm. This was no plane as it took about half hour to drop from site behind the tree line. Anyone have a clue what star or planet is showing so brightly with constant color change ?

If you follow Centaur's link above, the previous postings explain all but the dropping from sight.

Stars twinkle when their light is refracted passing through our atmosphere. The lower the object, the more atmosphere. The more atmosphere, the more twinkle. Likewise, a turbulent atmosphere because of pressure changes can affect visibility as well, even high in the sky. This is called poor seeing.

My experience tells me that simplest explanations are most frequently correct, and I am just usually ignorant of them. ;-)

Learning the sky will help to figure out what is normal. Too many people don't have a clue what is normal in the sky. The color change is twinkling, and it is caused by turbulence in the atmosphere. Twinkling is more noticible when stars (or planets) are low in the sky, and it is perfectly normal for them to appear to change color. Believe me, I was pretty freaked out the first time I saw this, looking at the star Arcturus with my telescope. I knew that Arcturus is a red supergiant, and will probably explode someday, and I wanted to alert astronomers that it might be about to blow. It's nothing that hasn't been seen since the dawn of civilization, and is nothing to be concerned about.

Wild150, did you fully read my earlier response to you? I went to some trouble to get the precise data for Seattle for the time you stated. Did my information provide you with at least a clue? Could the object have been Sirius as I suggested?

Those 1800+ viewings (not postings) of this thread have been made since July of 2009. Did you actually read the previous postings in this thread before you posted? All the previous sightings of various stars and planets were explained satisfactorily in this thread. I suspect that’s why so few of those who were simply viewing this thread felt any necessity to post.

Apparently the Discovery Channel and Michael Werner got the memo that the United Nations Security Council sent out sixty years ago demanding that all governments and astronomers (professional and amateur) join in a lifetime leak-proof conspiracy that requires making up fanciful explanations like that. We dedicated stargazers all know not to ever tell the public the truth about teenage extraterrestrials who get a kick out of soaring erratically through Earth’s atmosphere in brightly flashing ships that constantly change colors. Whats up guys. I wanted to let everyone know my experience with the red white and blue interchanging colors. I first saw these things in the Pagosa Springs sky with about four other people. I have seen them move across the sky like nothing I have ever seen in the sky before. They moved up, down, left, right, diagonal, forward, backward... they followed no regular paths of air travel and as far as I could tell they followed no laws of gravity. I observed these things for about three months in Pagosa Springs,CO. The strangest thing I have noticed about them is they never dissipated like a star, instead they always moved down as if they retreated into the ground. In addition when viewed with binoculars I noticed that the UFOs had a distinct shape, not just like that of a star.I spent the next three months in Denver. I would drive out miles into the mountains just hoping to catch a peak of these strange mesmerizing crafts. I never saw one UFO outside of Denver. After my time in Denver I drove back toward California. I stopped in Pagosa Springs to observe these strange things once again. I noticed they seem to peak in appearance between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM. On any given moment these things can also reappear in a different part of the sky. I have literally looked at these things one minute only to see it in a different spot in the sky the next. I have since seen similar events take place over Phoenix, Arizona and Palm Springs, CA. The strange thing about Palm Springs is that I have grown up my whole life enamored with the sky. It is only recently after 15 years of searching the sky for something abnormal that I have started seeing the UFOs. The more research I do, the more connections I find. Thousands of people have reported instances such as these. What made me realize that these were not stars was the ability of these UFOs to jump from one section of the sky to another without fault or any specific travel path. Has anyone else had similar experiences in these areas and does anyone have any idea what these UFOs might be? Granite the explanation above would have to be ruled out since the listed star above follows a specific orbital path in our view and could not jump from one position in the sky to the next.

I just saw this for the first time tonight. I know this is an older thread but I felt like maybe it would help if I gave the exact details.

I live 40 miles south of chicago. The star has been nearly in the same spot between 4 and 5 am, blinking wildly, appearing the brightest the further away from dawn the time is. It is directly SE according to the compass on my cell phone and east of the moon in the sky, lower in the sky than the moon (maybe about 40* from the horizon?). I took some video on the phone that isnt exactly HQ but should be good enough to get an idea. A star map leads me to believe it's capella but at first glance it looked incredible and a bit eerie.

You were likely viewing Sirius, the brightest fixed star, i.e. not a planet. At that time near the Moon the planet Jupiter would have appeared the brightest star-like object in the sky. Sirius will be rising about four minutes earlier each night, and will brilliantly grace the evening sky during the winter.

I was unable to see the video since a login was required and I am not a member. I just now noticed the estimate of 40° altitude. That would be about 44% of the way from the horizon toward the zenith. At 04:30 CDT this morning from the given location Sirius would have been 5° to the left of due southeast, but only 16° above the horizon. By 05:00 it would have been 1° to the right of due southeast while 20° above the horizon.

Other candidates are Rigel, Procyon, Betelgeuse and Aldebaran. They were all higher than Sirius at 04:30 and very generally toward the southeast. However, Sirius is usually the one about which we get questions from early risers in September. It’s the low altitude that produces twinkling and color shifting due to a long ride through the atmosphere.

Hey all.
I was out star gazing with my Astronomy class tonight, and I spotted something similar to what has been described in this thread; a star, flashing red from its peak and blue from its base, with a consistent white core. It was not a terribly bright star, but it was rather close to the horizon. It moved with the other stars in the sky, and was close enough to the horizon to eventually move behind a copse of trees about 100 yards away. I had my professor take a look through the telescope and, after we compared it to a passing aircraft and Jupiter (solidifying the fact that it was definitely not moving as fast as either of those), he concluded that it was indeed a star. He was, however, unsure as to which star it could be.
We are located in Newberg, Oregon. The star in question was more or less opposite of Polaris. Which is to say, if you faced Polaris and turned 180 degrees, it would be slightly to your left. We were able to view the star from 9:30pm to about 10:15pm, our time, at which point it was obscured from sight by the aforementioned trees.
Any information regarding this star would be most welcome. Thank you for your time.

The star was magnitude +1.2 Fomalhaut in the constellation Piscis Austrinus. During early autumn evenings it is the only bright light among the watery constellations above the southern horizon.
