This was an ok movie, but I think it tried to take it's self too serious. The dark force of the ID manifests to reality thru the alien mind machine. And Walter Pigeon's mind had dark corners to exploit.
This move has elements evidently stolen into other contemporary efforts like: Star Trek in the original series, an episode called "Spock's Brain", where a mind machine increases the intelligence of the user. The line "Brain....Brain...What is Brain?", by the blonde is priceless! But I regress.
And another element is from "Total Recall", where the ancient Martians built this grand technological infrastructure, much like the dead aliens on the Forbidden planet.
I like Robbie the Robot, later seen in "Lost in Space", DANGER DANGER Will Robinson!
The weapons in the movie left me rather cold. They didn't seem to have the punch that a laser should have. It seemed like they were caressing the beast with gentle rays.
Earl Holliman was a kick as the crews stooge, and in later "Police Woman", his macho attitude is just comical. Leslie Nielsen can't be taken seriously, not anymore. I'm glad he realized the campy acting of his past and laughed along with us.
Now Anne Francis was always a hottie...
But overall, I like this movie and take it for what it is.
