It's that time of year. Orion is rising in the morning hours so that means it's time for the Second Annual Chicago Astronomer/Sky Insight Star Party. I suggested to Joe that we do it on Saturday Oct 1st and use Oct 8th as a fall-back in case of overcast skies on the 1st. The potential conflict is the Prairie Skies Star Party in Kankakee is the weekend of Sept 30-Oct 1. I guess if there are enough people who'd like to do both, we could make it the 8th... or do both weekends. ;D

Basic info-

• Located just outside of Woodstock, IL in McHenry County
  
• About a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from various parts of Chicagoland (only 45 minutes from Elgin); Metra is also an option but we'd need to coordinate a pick up at the train station
  
• Mag 5.6 skies; obstructed horizon due to perimeter trees but still enough sky to see (70-80% depending where you set up)
  
• 1.5 acres lot; full facilities: electric, flush toilet, warming center (the garage), etc.
  
• Attendees should plan on arriving before dark. Not many street lights (we use moonlight out here) making it a challenge for first timers arriving in the dark.

I really like Al's piece of the Earth he offers to the Chicago Astronomers, as last years gathering of 10 members in Woodstock Illinois in October was just a great experience.

More details I'm sure are on the way, but I will plan for this one for sure. You all can read about last years event under the "Star Parties" board here.

Can't wait to see Al's new Scope set-up!...

Well, it's less than two weeks until the Oct 1st Woodstock Star Party but I haven't heard from anyone other than Joe. Is the conflict with Prairie Skies the problem? We could make it the 8th instead. The crescent Moon will be up until 9:18pm so we won't have fully dark skies until after 9pm, but I guess people could observe the moon during the early evening hours and target some of the brighter objects. Heck, with that small a crescent it won't cause a lot of problems in these skies, so I think the 8th would be good.

The other possible problem is those attending Prairie skies (especially two or three nights there) may not be interested in another star party the following week.

I'm open to moving it to the 8th but need some feedback. In fact, the sooner the better, because if we move it to the 8th, I'll probably attend Prairie Skies on the 1st.

Also, if anyone wants to spend the entire night and not have to leave sleepy we have space where people can pitch tents (with morning shade from the trees). The only problem is we do have neighbors that may be out and about mid morning, but at least a few hours sleep in better than driving home exhausted.

Please let me know if you decide to move the observing session to the weekend of the 8th.

The 8th is looking better, especially since I'd like to do one day at Prairie Skies. So unless it doesn't work for Joe, it'll probably be the 8th.

I'm certainly interested in attending. As of right now, the date(s) seem fine. Will a contingency date due to weather be later in the month due to the moon?

I couldn't figure the Astro fest having their event on the weekend with a full moon.

I can bring a couple of scopes.

If the 8th is a bust due to weather, the next opportunity would be the 29th which will be cooler outside. We'll have to play it by ear.

Okay, the Woodstock Star Party is only 5 days away (maybe less by the time you read this). I need to know who is attending.

My neighbor Dave will attend and he's inviting 2-3 other astronomer friends. I'd like to get a general idea of attendees AND I need to start sending out directions to the individuals. SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING. Did I mention there is NO fee? And that I'll treat you all to pizza?

Yes, it is THIS Saturday, Oct 8th.

As for the clouds. The forecast as of this moment (2005-Oct-4 5:31 CDT) Saturday night is supposed to be clear. Let's hope that doesn't change.

Of course, the temp is also supposed to drop down to 36° F. Brrrrrrr.

Since my computer crashed a few months ago, I have had my contact addresses messed up, (it also caused me to cease the newsletters for awhile).

We could reschedule for the next weekend or later, although a bit chillier, but whatever the majority desires and the schedule constraints of our host.

The cloud cover forecast for Saturday night went from clear skies, to partly cloudy to the current mostly clear. With any luck it'll stay mostly clear or change to clear.

• Directions (including maps) and contact numbers will be provided to individuals via private communication from Joe or me. A final GO or NO GO decision will be made around 12:30pm Saturday afternoon after the Clear Sky Clock update (it updates around noon). Everyone is encouraged to call me via the contact number I'll provide, to check in and see if the skies will be clear or not.
  
  
• Bring a RED flashlight to protect everyone's night vision. No need to buy anything fancy. Simply cover the front of a regular flashlight with something red such as cellophane or even a red balloon. Everyone should have their own flashlight to safely move around the area. Put in fresh batteries or bring spare batteries. Please NO WHITE LIGHTS.

=== Times ===

• Come as early as possible, anytime after 3pm (earlier arrivals can be accommodated for those traveling further distances). Sunset is it at 6:27pm CDT and it gets really dark out here on these country roads. There are ONLY about a half a dozen street lights in the last 15-20 mile stretch of the drive. It is MUCH easier to find your way while it is still light out. Estimated travel times: from Schaumburg = 1 hour, from Downers Grove = 1 hour 10 minutes, from Downtown Chicago = 2 hours, from Mokena = 2 hours, from Aurora = 1.5 hours
  
  
• Hopefully people will arrive and set up before sunset so we can get acquainted with each other, and everyone can familiarize themselves with the grounds before we start fumbling around in the dark.
  
  
• Stay as long as you wish, whether a couple of hours or until morning. Last year, a handful of people stayed the entire night, leaving as the sun rose.

=== Facilities ===

• The viewing field is the back yard (approx 1 acre) that has perimeter trees. The grounds are not perfectly level, so again a red flashlight is needed to help you move around. Because of the trees viewing horizons is not an option, but a large portion of the sky is viewable. First come, first serve on observing spots. Larger scopes way want to be set up on the west-side of the property to catch objects rising in the east, or near the middle to catch those setting early. Portable scopes have the advantage of moving around to access more of the sky.
  
  
• The garage will be used as the warming center, coffee station, dinning and snack area. Coffee, water, soda pop and snacks will be provided. Pizza will be ordered after most attendees arrive.
  
  
• A small bathroom will be available (no need to use the trees).
  
  
• 110V AC power available for computerized telescopes. Please notify me in advance so I can gauge the number of outlets necessary.
  
  
• Bring a RED flashlight (red only!) to protect everyone's night vision and to safely move about the property.
  
  
• I can offer a few people sleeping accommodations for those planning on staying most of, or all of the night/morning and would like to get some rest before heading out on the road. Please contact me directly if you are interested.

=== What to Bring ===

• Bring a RED flashlight to protect everyone's night vision and help you find your way safely around the grounds.
  
  
• Telescope, big or small. Even the small telescopes show great view in these dark skies.
  
  
• Binoculars, big or small. Many great binocular targets are visible (M31 and the double cluster in Perseus are great ones).
  
  
• Dress warm and bring a hat and gloves. Temps are forecasted to drop to the mid-30s.
  
  
• No alcohol will be provided or allowed on the property

=== Observing Targets ===

• Mars - only three weeks away from it's closest approach to Earth, Mars is an excellent target that is visible most of the night.
  
  
• The crescent Moon will be visible for a short period before it hides behind the southwestern trees. The Moon (25% illuminated) sets at 7:53pm.
  
  
• DSOs abound. If you arrive and set up before sunset, you can catch many DSOs before they set in the west. If you stay long enough, Orion and M42 make their grand appearance over the trees around 1-2 am.

Hey guys,

Looks like Mother Nature is playing tricks again!
What looked like a promising weekend up at Woodstock is quickly clouding up.

Hoping to bring my 8" mounted on the Vixen.

Err......I'll restate that again:

Hoping to bring along my 8" cassegrain attached to the Vixen goto mount.
Would like to compare views with the 8" Meade SCT.

I'll stay tuned.....

Latest Clear Sky Clock (noon Friday) forecasts 10% clouds until midnight and then 20% clouds. Not bad, but not as good as a clear night which is what's forecasted for tonight.

The next Clear Sky Clock update will be tonight around midnight and I'll probably be outside at the scope and check it then, and post an update here. The real important update will be the Saturday noon update. That one will be the most accurate...

I'll be bringing collimation tools, Chesire eyepiece, laser collimator and Jim Fly's autocollimator. The autocollimator is an awesome tool and everyone s welcome to use it on their scope (iffen you're interested), but it only fits a 2" focusser.

Read up on collimation before you try. There is a lot of info on collimation on the web. here's the info from Fly's site:

I can collimate fairly well, but I'm no expert.

Cool. I collimated my SCT recently to ensure the best possible views of Mars this month. It my first attempt ever, and it was manual.

You'll have to do a demonstration for us at the star party using your tools on your scope.

It all looks good and my Adler pals are on.

I will most likely now tag along with Bill, since he doesn't live too far from me, but may take the train back to Chicago...we will play it by ear. But I'll let you know what I do Al before hand.

But, after the John Dobson movie, (Which the Chicago Astronomers will watch together en masse), I will pack up and be on my way.

I am quite excited about our second annual Chicago Astronomer star party and pleased my Adler pals are joining along with the fun. I won't bring along my scope, but there will be plenty to peer thru including Al's and Bills.

Al...I will call you after the movie to see how things are shaping up and for a final determiniation for a go-no go.

The midnight update of the Woodstock Clear Sky Clock shows a reduced window of viewing. It forecasts:

10% clouds between 6pm - 7pm (sunset 6:22pm and twilight)
Clear from 7pm until 10pm (best 3 hour window)
10% clouds starting at 10pm
20% clouds until 2am
quickly becoming overcast from that point

Now we have one more update to check and it is the most important one, as it'll be the most accurate, at noon. I will be watching for it and checking satellite imagery shortly after noon. Hopefully things will improve.

I wish I could make it tonight but Im in the middle of packing and have a really nasty cold. We are moving by the end of the month.

The only Asteroids or Comets that are viewable tonight are really dim hard to pick up in small scopes. I hope you gus have fun and have some decent viewing conditions.

Dont forget the New Home Star Party at my place by next spring. We wont have the Observatory by spring but it will be within a year. I will know by months end on when we'll have the glass and make sure the size. Just remeber it will be a weekend get together. So bring your tents.

It looks like from 7 to 11 pm, it may be cloudy with it clearing up after that until 7ish Sunday morning. I would recommend that if doesn't clear more...that we cancel this evenings event and reschedule...

Let's see what the noon report provides.

Yeah, at this point it doesn't look good. Watching the satellite images shows the entire east coast blanketed with a cloud mass that appears to be pushing clouds into IL from the northeastern.
