Space exploration, telescopes are the focus as Adler plots its future - 16 July 2005
Last month, the Adler Planetarium's board of trustees approved a long-range plan that will continue to transform Chicago's connection to the stars.
The goal is that "Adler will inspire the next generation of explorers, improve science literacy, encourage science advocacy, conduct original research and increase the diversity and size of its audiences," according to media information.
That will be accomplished by placing greater emphasis on space exploration and telescopes, Adler president Paul H. Knappenberger Jr. said.
"We've dealt with the science of astronomy for 75 years," he said. "Now, we're broadening the mission to include more aspects of space science and the exploration of space.
We asked people why they hadn't been back since the fifth grade, and what they'd like to see," Knappenberger said. "They told us two things: Get a sense of exploring space, and they wanted to look through a telescope. That's going to happen."
The dome observatory will be renovated so visitors can peer through telescopes with filters to see sun flares and sun spots. And, computer technology will allow them to look through telescopes at the night sky halfway around the world.
