Wow
did anybody else see the moon today at about 6:30 pm
march 14 2006. Like a sun pillar, the moon had 2 sollid bright pillars. One going up and one going down, they were about the length of 2-3 full moons each and may have actually past in front of the moon. Man i wish I had a camera. well at least I was blessed to see it and I can always draw a picture. This has got to be extreamly rare If anybody got a picture please post it here.

Congratulations on seeing the pillars, Tim. I live just a few miles from you and saw none. What I did see as the Moon was rising was a shading on its right side due to the fact it was experiencing a penumbral eclipse. There were occasional low clouds to the east that may have contained ice crystals, and that could have led to the effect you witnessed. The eclipse will be ending shortly, so we should see a bright Full Moon for the rest of the evening, whenever clouds don't intervene. Although the Moon is not far past apogee, so it appears a little smaller than usual.

Yep...Indeed I did see the Pillars north and south of the Moon from the Chicago Lakefront... ;D I will detail it more in the eclipse post soon, but at first I thought my eyes were acting up. I asked fellow Chicago Astronomers sharing the event with me if they saw it, and they did too. I then "eclipsed" the moon with my thumb and the pillars were more evident.

Quite cool!...
