Hey bud...thx for your first post and registering as part of the Chicago Astronomer family all the way from China!
I always use the the punch line from your joke.
When curious people approach me, asking how far can I see with my telescope, I bite my tongue, smile, take a deep breath and explain the following...
With the naked eye..we can see the sun 93 million miles away, planets...tens of millions of miles away. See that star?... (take your pick), that is (x) millions of light years away! All the telescope does is magnify the image, and allows you to see objects a bit farther away than with the naked eye.
And with that, the conversation starts about astronomy and related topics.
