Looks like the clouds that were summoned at the parting of the Red Sea in the 10 Commandments with Chuck Heston.

Some of the guys on the special-effects team must have seen this sort of thing before. Or were inspired by some painter(s) who had witnessed this sort of atmospheric phenomena.

I'm no bible scholar, but I'm pretty sure the old testament does not elaborate on the description of cloud phenomenae in the book of Exodus.

These clouds remind me of the sky downwind from a major volcanic eruption.
