I was sent this short account of the four hurricane experience in Florida that Lainie sent me. She is one of our Chicago Astronomer Newsletter readers
Man, that's a rough time. But I am glad that Lainie survived the four punch hit.
Thanks for the account.
Four Hurricanes hit Florida in the summer of 2004 (so far)
Hurricane Charlie hit Punta Gorda, a coastal city in southwest Florida causing monumental damage: loss if life and property..Hurricane Frances blew into Martin and Palm beach counties..I live in Palm beach county..we were lucky because our condo is on the 2nd floor of a 4 storey concrete building.
We lost power for 7 days. No a/c hot water, cooking, laundry, etc.. We Americans are spoiled..I felt like we were living in the Middle ages. The nights were very dark as the only light was a few flickering candles..We lived on peanut butter sandwiches for a few days because we were told to stay indoors..The food in our refrigerator/freezer spoiled and had to be discarded..
Hurricane Ivan. nicknamed "Ivan, The Terrible" wrought havoc to Gulf Coast states like Alabama, Georgia and Texas..AND Hurricane Jeanne again struck the southeast coast of Florida - making a landfall in the same area as Hurricane Frances.
By the time I got over the paranoia from Frances, Jeanne hit us..I felt trapped..No place to go as Florida is a peninsula and surrounded by water on three sides..After Frances I frantically called my son who lives in Texas to get online and book my husband and I on a flight out of Florida..No flights were available for 2 weeks!...and when Jeanne betrayed us, by making a 360 degree turn back towards Florida I was disheartened.
My husband Bill, who is a Korean War Veteran told me I was a softie and would never make it in the army..A tropical storm named Lisa is way out in the Atlantic, but meteorologists say she is heading north and will not threaten Florida..The hurricane season ends December 1st. Stay tuned!
