Guzmán - Patron Saint of Astronomers... « Thread Started on Jan 17, 2006, 5:41pm »
Dominic De Guzmán Patron Saint of Astronomers
St. Dominic (1170-1221). Son of Felix Guzman and Bl. Joan of Aza, he was born at Calaruega, Spain, studied at the Univ. at Palencia, was probably ordained there while pursuing his studies and was appointed canon at Osma in 1199.
Dominic spent the last years of this life organizing the order, traveling all over Italy, Spain and France preaching and attracting new members and establishing new houses. The new order was phenomenally successful in conversion work as it applied Dominic's concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with popular needs. He convoked the first general council of the order at Bologna in 1220 and died there the following year on August 6, after being forced by illness to return from a preaching tour in Hungary. He was canonized in 1234 and is the patron saint of Astronomers. Feast day is Aug. 8.

Steve,
Considering this new information...
At star parties, I will now read to you all solemnly from star charts and hum catchy Gregorian chants. And that light about me...may not be from a red flashlight...
I'll see what I can do about the clear skies. I'll be on the South Terrance of the Adler working on it...
p.s. I thank fellow Chicago Astronomer and Adler Telescope Operator Linda S. for bringing this to light!

Hiram,
It is rather a coincidence that we both, (Dominic De Guzmán and myself), promote astronomy and have the same surname...
May he smile upon us and grace all of us with the clearest skies and enlightened membership.

in for the bike riding thing.
What Hiram is referring to is that when I was an instructor with the Chicago Police Explorer program, I had my students participate in a bicycle touring club as part of their physical fitness regime. We would be 20/30/40 strong and peddling our little hearts out along the lakefront, all with flags and leaders with radios. It was great fun, and I rather miss it.
I thought that it might be a great activity for the Chicago Astronomers to participate this summer. Some of the membership have stated their desire to join in..and that's cool...
I still have my volleyball equipment and we can make a day out of it, and then catch a planet or two later on in the night. This thread is not the place for this, (I'll create a subject thread elsewhere here and email notice later), but great that Hiram will join in!
